Things to do when Airline Offload Passenger Baggage

Passenger baggage is often offloaded by the airlines due to operational reasons. Commonly, the offloaded baggage arrives on the next available flight; if not, then it will be forwarded to the airline hub station. Things to do when an airline offload passenger baggage are:

1. File PIR/AHL Report
2. Write an email to the Airline Info
3. Proceed toward Claim Settlement

01: PIR (Property Irregularity Report)

At the baggage collection hall, Airline or GHA staff will be present for the flight and will be looking after it. The conveyor belt will stop when all baggage for the particular flight has been cleared from the aircraft. If any baggage didn’t arrive from the belt, then seek help from the staff. The staff will generate the PIR/AHL report of the missing baggage. Keep a copy of the report, along with the baggage tag and the boarding card, in case of a claim.

02: Write an Email to the Airline info

Write a detailed email to the airline info that would include the information about the missing baggage and attach all the helpful documents. The email would include the following things:

• Delivered Weight
• Missing Weight
• Baggage Contents
• Estimated Value
• Contact Information
• Address
• Significant Information (if any)

Attach a picture of Baggage Tags, Boarding Pass, Ticket, Passport, Baggage Picture and PIR in the email.

03: Proceed Toward Claim Settlement

The airline will trace out the missing baggage for 21days; after that, they will declare it lost. Then, a claim settlement will be processed for the missing baggage. The procedure for settlement would be different for each airline. Commonly, airlines calculate the claim amount according to the baggage weight. The claim amount varies for domestic and international flights.

The airline would not fully compensate for the lost baggage, but to make a strong case, provide all proof and details of the invoices for the contents that were in the lost baggage.
