American Airlines to suspend 06 domestic routes for 2 months due to higher jet fuel prices. Last year, in 2025, according to the US DOT, more than 1.4 million local passengers traveled on these 6 routes. The route suspension will be seen from Aug 5 until Oct 5 on the following routes (Ishrion Aviation):
- LAX to Cleveland (CLE)
- LAX to Columbus (CMH)
- LAX to Pittsburgh (PIT)
- LAX to Washington Dulles (IAD)
- CLT to Ontario (ONT)
- CLT to Sacramento (SMF)
The ongoing US-Iran conflict has disrupted oil supply routes as the Strait of Hormuz remains closed to this date, which has increased the oil prices by around $4 per gallon in 2026. According to Reuters, the airline expects to report a loss of around 40% per share and a $1.10 per share profit. The airline also expects that if the oil supply remains closed throughout the year, its jet fuel bills will rise to more than $4 billiion.

Many of the suspended routes were newly launched by American Airlines in 2026; therefore, they were an easier target for temporary suspension.
After suspension, passengers would have fewer options for non-stop flights, which would lead to higher fares. The airline will offer a full refund or a reaccommodation on an alternative carrier to those passengers who have purchased a ticket on these affected flights.
The airline has not declared whether this suspension will continue after 6 October or not, but their decision will highly depend upon the fuel prices, travel demand, or market conditions.
American Airlines Leveling Up Connectivity
American Airlines planned to equip more than 500 narrowbody aircraft with Starlink Wi-Fi. Passengers will have gate-to-gate fast internet capable of streaming, video calls, gaming, and real-time connectivity across domestic and short-haul flights (Josh Cahill).
