United Flight 1551 Diverts After Passenger Tries to Open Door

On 21 May 2026, a passenger disrupted United Airlines Flight 1551 that was en route from Newark to Guatemala City. The unruly passenger allegedly tried to open the door of the aircraft while it was cruising at an altitude of 36,000 feet. He also attacked another passenger. The pilot declared an emergency and diverted the plane to the nearest airport, Washington Dulles. The plane landed safely, and no injuries were reported.

The law enforcement agencies took the passenger into custody. The airline canceled the flight, and passengers were accommodated at an overnight hotel. The replacement flight was arranged the next day for the Guatemalan Capital.
